Most children adopted from foster care in the US and Canada are eligible for adoption assistance benefits so their families can better meet their needs.
What is Adoption Assistance?
Adoption assistance (also known as adoption subsidy) provides financial and other supports to help adoptive families meet the basic and unique needs of children in care, including making it easier for the families to access medical care, counseling or therapy, special equipment, tutoring programs, and other services. Adoption assistance is designed to ensure that children have the best possible chance of finding and thriving in an adoptive family.
Who is eligible to receive Adoption Assistance?
Adoption assistance/subsidies are generally available for children deemed “special needs” by state or county criteria, with about 90% of children adopted from foster care in the US being eligible.
What benefits come with Adoption Assistance?
Benefits can include monthly payments, Medicaid coverage, and reimbursement for certain one-time adoption-related expenses. Additional supports like childcare or respite care may be available in some states. Access varies by state, so prospective adoptive parents should discuss these benefits with their adoption worker, and existing adoptive families can check state-specific procedures for obtaining or adjusting subsidies.
