Growing up in Washington Heights, New York City, I witnessed how our vibrant community celebrated diverse cultural histories. My teachers introduced us to Hanukkah and World War II, while my neighbors commemorated Juan Pablo Duarte, a Dominican revolutionary. Growing up in this beautiful community I learned that relationships are critical to transformation. But one memory stands out: sitting with our music teacher, learning about apartheid, and being encouraged to write a song about it. That song gained statewide attention, leading to a small but magical performance at Carnegie Hall before senators and the governor. Looking back, I’m reminded that in times of crisis, community and creativity can change the world. This year, I encourage you to do both.
Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy
This January, we honor Dr. King’s legacy of bringing communities together. His vision of unity and understanding continues to inspire our work supporting families. As we commemorate MLK Day, we’re reminded that positive change happens when we work together to build stronger communities.
